With over 11,000 monthly readers, it is important for El Estoque to adapt new ways to tell stories through the web. This year, we have been emphasizing the implementation of new multimedia tools. In the Multimedia Design class, all multimedia package stories must include at least one unique multimedia element, such as video, audio, graphics or other embedded tools. By implementing these elements, we have witnessed an increase in readership. We constantly monitor our Google Analytics data to make sure that our content is engaging.

For this story, I experimented with a different platform called Medium in order to tell the story in a more visually appealing manner. I included various multimedia elements in order to maintain reader engagement throughout the story. I began with a brief infographic outlining the details of former judge Aaron Persky’s history.

I then embedded a timeline I created using a platform called Timeline JS. The timeline showed all of the most important events following Persky’s hiring. It not only provided necessary information, but also worked as a visually engaging element.

I included a screenshot of an article from LHS’ publication, The Epic, to show evidence of the fact that district officials told LHS staff members that they had been unaware of Persky’s past affiliation with the Santa Clara Superior Court. I highlighted the key details using Adobe Illustrator.

I contrasted this information with Persky’s actual job application, which I obtained by filing a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. I also highlighted the most important parts of the application using Adobe Illustrator.

While portraying the perspective of LHS senior Linda Goh, I included screenshots of her Instagram story posts (with her consent), in which she publicly shared her opinions.

Below is a collection of different platforms I have used to share my stories. I most commonly use Atavist, Adobe Spark and Weebly. These platforms generally have a greater emphasis on visuals, allowing for more reader engagement.

Often times, we code our own multimedia packages instead of using Wordpress or another external platform like Atavist, Adobe Spark or Weebly. For my multimedia package about Asian representation, my section decided to use a website that we created using HTML. We then linked individual stories to the website to make the stories easy for readers to access.
