PHOTOJOURNALISM

Photos have the power to tell their own stories.

Whenever I take photos, I try to capture the raw emotions, the candid moments and the general atmosphere of the scene that I am immersed in. I like to experiment with different angles while still adhering to traditional composition rules. By incorporating photos into my stories, I hope to convey the information as it is — raw and unfiltered.

BOYS BASKETBALL: THE MATADORS LOSE AGAINST WILCOX HS 44-53

On Feb. 7, The MVHS boys basketball team suffered another tough loss against Wilcox HS 44-53 as it continued to seek its first league win all season.

Part of covering any sports game at MVHS includes taking photos. I tried to capture action shots that showed important plays, strong emotions and interesting angles. The photos from this game effectively showcased the general atmosphere and summarized the game as a whole.

STRAY KIDS "DISTRICT 9: UNLOCK" TOUR LOS ANGELES

Asides from my role as Editor-in-chief of El Estoque, I am the Content Feature Writer for Allkpop, the most-trafficked K-Pop news site with over 12 million monthly readers. One of my main responsibilities is covering concerts. I take photos and occasionally conduct interviews with the K-Pop artists.

OTHER CONCERT PHOTOGRAPHY

Some of the other concerts that I have covered include BewhY's "The Movie Star" Tour, Amber Liu's "X" Tour and SEVENTEEN's "Ode to You" Tour. For all of my concert photography, I try my best to capture the ambience of the concert. I focus on catching artists' while they are showing off powerful performance aspects or when they are particularly emoting in their performance. All of my photos are action photos with vibrant colors and a clear subject.

BOUQUET OF ORCHIDS

“They’re hardy plants.”

The temperature can reach below freezing before there is flower damage, while other variations can handle triple digit heat. They populate environments from tropical rainforests to the Himalayas to the tops of oak trees. The orchid family Orchidaceae ranks as the second largest family of flowering plants, and its species can be found all over the world. The non-profit volunteer organization Malihini Orchid Society, which is dedicated to appreciating and cultivating the diverse orchid species and hybrids, hosted its 2019 Annual Orchid Sale and Culture Demonstration on April 6 and 7. I chose to cover this unique community event with a photo essay in order to effectively portray the orchids, as simply describing the flowers in written form would not have been able to capture their beauty to the same extent.

MVHS FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA KICKS OFF TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

On Jan.19, MVFBLA kicked off its technology program in collaboration with other technology clubs on campus such as Hacks and C++, to teach students how to code. Students gathered in the library at 10 a.m., where guest speaker and Apple software engineer Victor Augusteo taught students how to build a website. Sophomore Mark Solomonik, director of the partnership with business project, led the event and began by giving students a more in-depth explanation of the program. I chose to use photos to cover this event in order to present the story in a more interesting and engaging manner. I tried to capture the cooperative learning environment to the best of my ability by featuring the students working with each other and with the guest speaker.
